NEW AT 6: WE HAVE TWO EXAMPLES OF SHOPPING- REINVENTED. FIRST, A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR REVAMP FOR AN AGING SOUTH BAY MALL. THE EASTRIDGE SHOPPING CENTER, IN EAST SAN JOSE HAS SEEN ITS SHARE OF SHUTTERED STORES OVER THE YEARS. OUR OWN KIET DO– USED TO WORK THERE, AND HAS A LOOK AT THE BIG PLANS FOR THE MALL’S FUTURE. KIET.. WORK HAS ALREADY BEGUN, AS PAINTERS PUT A FRESH COAT ON WHAT’S BEING BILLED AS THE “NEW EASTRIDGE MALL. (NATS door opening) THE DARK WALKWAYS, OLD FLOORING, AND CLAUSTROPHOBIC FEEL ARE ALL GONE. OVER THE PAST DECADE TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS HAVE BEEN INVESTED TO TRANSFORM IT INTO A LIGHT AND AIRY SPACE. AND IF YOU BELIEVE THE NEW OWNERS, A FEW MILLION DOLLARS MORE WILL TURN IT INTO THISâ AND MAKE IT EVEN BETTER. EASTRIDGE SAYS THEY ARE OFFERING WHAT ONLINE SHOPPING CANNOT: A SENSE OF COMMUNITY. (Anthony Campo, Eastridge Mall: Bringing people together, we need that personal interaction. We need to be able to touch somebody, we need to be able to have those face to face interactions.) (Kiet: What a trip down memory lane. 25 years ago I worked at this very spot. It’s now a Forever 21, but it used to a Gap. But it didn’t last long. In the late 90s it was shut down because of lagging sales, but also because of rampant shoplifting. Now, I don’t even recognize the place anymore.) TO GET A FEEL OF WHAT EASTRIDGE USED TO LOOK LIKEâ (NATS) HERE’S A CLIP FROM THE 1972 MOVIE “THE CANDIDATE” STARRING ROBERT REDFORD, THAT WAS ACTUALLY SHOT INSIDE THE MALL. TO THAT UNMISTAKABLE RED CARPET, HEXAGONAL TILEWORKâ AND NOT TO MENTION THE WROUGHT IRON GUARDRAIL, WAS ALL THE RAGE 40 YEARS AGO. (NATS) THE OWNERS ARE SPENDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO REVAMP THE CENTER COURT YET AGAIN WHEN IT’S ALL DONE, IT’LL HAVE THE FEEL OF AN INDOOR ORCHARD. THE FOOD COURT WILL ALSO UNDERGO A MASSIVE TRANSFORMATION, TO BRING IN MORE LOCAL OWNERS AND TURN IT INTO A MECCA FOR FOODIES. (Nanci Klein, City of San Jose Economic Development: Q: I thought Amazon killed brick and mortar stores, no? No.) NANCI KLEIN WITH THE CITY OF SAN JOSE’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TEAM, SAYS ACROSS THE STREET FROM EASTRIDGE, ANOTHER 250 HOMES WILL SOON BE BUILT, WITH EVEN MORE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTSâE¢ VIDENCE THAT OF ALL PLACES, EAST SAN JOSE IS BOOMING. (Klein: So much of what is happening is on food and entertainment. Places where social gatherings can happen, neighbors meeting neighbors, unique special spaces coming to better the quality of life.) AND THERE IS ANOTHER MAKEOVER IN THE HEART OF SAN FRANCISCO’S CHINATOWN…
